The gardens are a popular pastime for many people. It could be said that the garden today has a great importance - as a place of peace and quiet, it is also able to influence the well-being of the guests. It is also a place where hobby gardeners can give free rein to their creativity and imagination. If you are looking for new great ideas on garden design, we recommend that you take a look at this article. Because here we show you how you could build a herbal spiral yourself. You will also find many images and ideas from which you may draw inspiration.
It is not without reason that herbal spirals have been gaining in popularity lately. One of the many advantages of such a herbal snail is that you can plant different herbs with very different site requirements in this way. This allows you, for example, to combine Mediterranean plants such as rosemary, which prefers a dry soil, with other plants that need a moist soil (such as peppermint). When building the herbal spiral, however, there are some aspects to consider. The choice of the right place, for example, is not to be disregarded. On the contrary - it is recommended that you choose a full sun in your own garden for this purpose. The reason for this is that most herbs need not only more light, but also a lot of heat. Therefore, you should give your herb spiral a place lit up by the sun. If you want to plant the herb snail with more herbs, the plant you build should not be too small, because the plants need enough space to develop well. This leads to the conclusion that the size of the plant snail mainly depends on the number of herbs. An ordinary herbal spiral is about 80 cm high and is usually characterized by a diameter of three meters.
The next step is to stake out the plan of the herbal spiral. The whole process can be simplified by using a string and a few small pegs for this purpose. We suggest you take a look at a shell - its shape could help. So you will have some precise ideas about what your system should look like. Keep in mind that it should open to the south. For the small pond you should dig a 40 cm deep hole. Thereafter, the herb spiral is to be created with stones. For example, you could use clinker or natural stone for the wall of the plant. However, we also recommend that you read our article on the subject of plant stones - many people use these planters to border the small garden ponds or to build herbal spirals. And a little tip from our team of experts: if you build the wall without mortar, you will give the whole herbal spiral a natural and aesthetic look. You really will not make a mistake if you plant the open joints with oregano. The small animals could also take advantage of it - for example, the walls of the wall could also serve as shelters for small creatures (such as lizards). So you will have a not only very nice looking, but also environmentally friendly garden. The next step is to fill the area with gravel. You should also use compost, sand and garden soil to meet the needs of the plants you have selected.
Then you should create the pond - here are also some aspects to consider. For the convenience of the gardeners, there are also ready-made ponds, which can be easily bought and placed in the hole of the herbal spiral - this possibility is always at your disposal. However, if you feel like proving your creativity, you could always create your own garden pond - all you need is a pond liner that you want to lay down first. And then the edges of the pond sheet should be laminated with large stones. Now you can fill your pond with water!
In addition, we give some small tips that might help you: it is recommended that you cover the area under the pond liner with a thin layer of sand. The reason for this is that the pond liner can be protected in this way against various damage. Otherwise, there is a risk that you will soon have to buy a new pond liner. For that reason, you can say that you will also save a lot of money by simply following our advice. It would also be better if the pond is a bit bigger, because in such a pond, an ecological balance can easily arise - the water is self-cleaning and should not be cleaned by filters, pumps and biochemical means. If you decide to fish for a pond, keep in mind that the pond should be at least 1m deep - this is the only way the fish will have a chance to survive the winter. In this case, but also the whole herbal spiral is larger.
Perhaps you now ask yourself how you can plant the herbal spiral that you have already built? Here we show you a list of different herbs that are suitable for the respective zones of the herbal snail.
Upper zone - it is actually the driest zone of the herbal spiral: thyme (Thymus vulgaris), Ysop (Hyssopus officinalis), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Winter savory (Satureja montana), Italian Strawflower (Helichrysum italicum), Marjoram (Origanum majorana) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
Middle zone - it is moderately dry and rather fresh compared to the upper zone: the Kleine Wiesenknopf (Sanguisorba minor), Borage (Borago officinalis), Melissa (Melissa officinalis), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Rauke (Eruca sativa) and coriander (Coriandrum sativum)
Lower zone - The following herbs are suitable for this fresh and humid zone: Maggic herb (Levisticum officinale), Cucumber herb (Anethum graveolens), Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), Scarlet monarch (Monarda didyma), Bergminze (Calamintha grandiflora), Grasses (Allium schoenoprasum)
riparian zone - this is actually the riparian zone of the pond of the herbal spiral and that is why this zone is so wet and wet: Peppermint (Mentha piperita) and Real Watercress (Nasturtium officinale - a herb used as a vegetable that can swim in the pond)
But we recommend that you do not plant your herbal snail right away, because the soil should first be compacted. It would be better if you wait for a few rain showers for this purpose. Keep in mind that spring is actually the best planting season - for example, the herb species from the upper zone are very sensitive to cooling and frost, so they should not be planted after the fall.
